We are delighted to announce the launch of BluePoint, an innovative app developed by Lero researchers at the University of Limerick. Funded by the EU BluePoint Project, this app employs drones with cutting-edge technology including infrared (IR), multispectral imaging, LiDAR, and artificial intelligence ( AI) to detect and locate plastic waste on beaches.

Some Key Features are:

Drones with Sensors: The app utilises advanced sensors to scan and identify plastic waste in natural environments. It can cover vast areas and pinpoint exact locations of debris. It can even identify items as small as bottle caps.

Augmented Reality (AR) Mode: The app offers an AR mode, allowing users to visualise the plastic waste in real-time and better understand its environmental impact.

User-Friendly Interface: With an intuitive design, the app is easy for anyone to navigate and contribute to clean-up efforts.

Commercial Oppertunities: The app links communities wtih companies to commercialise marine plastic waste, fostering and enabling a circular economy.

Prof. Gerard Dooley, Co-director of the Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems at UL, emphasises that BluePoint is more than just an app. It's a powerful tool for environmental conservation. By engaging the public and providing essential information and resources, the app enables communities to keep their coastlines plastic-free and promotes industry-wide sustanability.

Prof. Dooley notes that anyone with a suitable camera-equipped drone can scan areas and upload data. He also highlights that commercial partners plan to incorporate the project's outcomes, using recycled raw materials, to drive a circular economy.
